Astrological Significance Of Karwa Chauth

As per Hindu traditions, the occasion is observed nine days before Diwali, in the month of Kartika, during the waning Moon cycle. “Karwa Chauth” comprises two words, ‘Karwa,’ which is an ‘earthen pot with a spout’ and ‘Chauth’ which means fourth. Women use the earthen pot to offer water - ‘aragya’ to the moon as part of the festival’s rituals, praying for their husband’s long life.

Karwa Chauth celebrations 2026 coincide with Sankashti Chaturthi, a day that eliminates all evil. During Karwa Chauth, married women must worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati (‘Nitya Sumangali’ - a woman eternally free from widowhood), Lord Kartikeya, and Lord Ganesha for her husband’s long life and prosperity.

How Is Karwa Chauth Celebrated?

Karwa Chauth is a traditional festival where married women observe a day-long fast and pray for the well-being and longevity of their husbands. The day begins with Sargi before sunrise, followed by the vrat, festive dressing and evening puja. As the day comes to an end, women wait for the Moon to appear and complete the Karwa chauth rituals. Once the Moon is visible, they look at it through a sieve and offer arghya before turning to their husbands. The husband then offers his wife water and feeds her sweets or a little food, marking the end of her fast. The moment brings the day’s prayers, rituals and togetherness to a warm close.
