The relationship between a child and parents is very well depicted in the Indian oral tradition through the story of a father and a son.
One fine evening, sat a father and a son on the porch of the house. The father noticed a bird sitting on the entrance wall. He asked the son which bird it was. The son smiled and replied that it was a crow. Apart being partially blind, the father was also quite deaf. He asked the son again what kind of bird it was. The son this time told with sincerity that it was a crow, but the smile had dwindled. The father couldn't comprehend it yet. He again questioned the same. This time the son felt a bit irritated. Clearing his throat, he raised the pitch of his voice and answered. But, the father was too deaf to hear what he said. He put up his question once again. The son was already busy reading a book and had paused thrice. He couldn't bear it anymore. His agitation increased and he shot back the name of the bird in a shrill voice. The father, who was though partially blind and deaf, wasn't insensible. He felt the ire of his child and tears welled up his eyes. After a few minutes he composedly asked his son to go to his room and get an old diary of him. The son, who had by this time got somewhat conscious of his mistake, quickly paced up and brought the desired. The father then asked the son to read a certain page. The page was beautifully written, and the words incorporated showed the happiness and contentment of the writer. In the diary the father had mentioned a similar scene on the same porch. The child sat with his father and noticed a bird over the entrance wall. The three years old child was too naive and the bird was a new phenomenon. A few lines down the father had counted down the thirty six times the child had repeatedly questioned the name of the bird. The father, amused and intrigued by the child's curiosity continued answering with an unwavering smile and interest. The thirty sixth time, the child had learnt by heart that it was a crow.
The diary entry moistened the eyes of the son and he fell on his father's feet.
