Origin and Importance :
Although a local of South Americas, this flower’s reference could be found in Indian mythology too. In Mahabharata, this flower finds its significance in the five yellow petals that pertain to the Pandavas; and the hundreds of tiny ones around it, to the Kauravas.
The green bulb at the centre, is also known as the corona, and indicates Draupadi, the Queen of Pandavas. This flower has three filaments, which signify Brahma-Vishnu-Shiv — The Holy Trinity. The central radial of this bloom symbolises the Sudarshan Chakra of Lord Krishna.
It’s interesting to note that the Rakhi Bel plant also has relevance to Christians, as its convoluted structure with different parts of blooms symbolises the energy of Christ.
Appearance:
This flower is strikingly similar to a rakhi, and hence, is commonly called the ‘Rakhi Bel plant.’ A tendril-climbing, rapid growing vine, it becomes woody in warm winter climates, and is herbaceous and dies during the cold season.
Its woody stems can grow up to 15 to 20 metres, with rings that look for backing. Rakhi Bel creates beautiful white blossoms which have blue, purple or pink calyx crown sprouts.
These flowers, which typically bloom all year round, have five lobed leaves that are usually 10–18 cm long and wide. The blossom itself is a whopping 10 centimeters long, with 5 separate sepals and white petals.
It’s surmounted by a crown of violet or blue fibers, and looks rather stunning! It also has 5 greenish yellow stamens which have purple marks.
How it Grows
Light Preference:
The prime requirement of this plant is abundant sunlight. Although the Rakhi plant needs morning sunshine, it has to be protected from the harshness emitted by the afternoon sun.
Water Requirement :
The Rakhi Bel requires moderate watering. It’s advisable to create a little hole inside the pot, so that there’s enough saturation for it to thrive.
Temperature:
The ideal temperature that it needs to bloom is from 19-24ºC.
