Rakhi or Raksha Bandhan is amongst India's biggest festivals that is celebrated with great joy. Not only people in India but also in states, love to celebrate this festival in a grand manner. This is an Indian festival that is specially dedicated to the bond shared between brothers and sisters. Celebrating this festival keeps the bond of brothers and sisters intact. There are various interesting mythological and historical stories associated with Raksha Bandhan. These stories have influenced the celebration of Rakhi festival.
A story about Lord Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi and King Bali is one of those mythological stories. It is said that Bali was a true devotee of Lord Vishnu and had defeated the Indra in a battle. Seeing this, Lord Vishnu disguised as a dwarf requested him give space to live that was equal to Lord Vishnu's three steps. King Bali was known as a generous king and hence he adhered to the dwarf's request. With just 2 steps Lord Vishnu covered the entire world. Seeing this, King Bali offered his head on which he could keep his third step. God then placed his third step on Bali's head sending him to another land. But since Bali was a true devotee of Lord Vishnu he brought him back and blessed him with eternal immortality. To protect his devotee, he disguised as a gatekeeper and left Vaikunth. Seeing Vaikhuth devoid of its God, goddess Lakshmi too went to stay with him in Bali's palace disguised as a Brahmin woman. Bali accepted her as a sister and on Raksha Bandhan he asked what she wanted as gift. Goddess asked him to return her husband who was the gate keeper. Both then revealed their identities, blessed Bali and went back to Vaikunth.
